Dhanvantari : Hindu God of Medicine Happy Dhantrayodashi originator of ayurveda

It is believed in Hindu mythology that the God of medicine, Dhanvantari first appeared as a saviour of demigods(Devas), when they were in Peril.

According to Shrimad Bhagavat Purana, ancient demigods asked Lord Vishnu for help in their medical emergencies, and he told them to churn the oceans.

From the depth of oceans, a primeval cosmic life substance rose “Dhanvantari”, a great physician with a pot of Amrit (nectar) elixir of immortality in his hand. Dhanvatri’s birth from the depth of oceans is celebrated every year on the Hindu Holiday of “Dhanteras”.

The day of Dhanteras is also known as Dhantrayodashi or Dhanvantari Trayodashi.

Human suffering moved God Dhanvantri so much that he decided to be reborn. He was born once again as Prince of Kashi (Varanasi) as the son of king Dirgmata. The name “Dhanvantri” indicates the gift of God to remove human suffering. He introduced Ayurveda to the world, and today he is known as God of all medical sciences.
