Vasant Panchami orSarasvati Puja, is afestival that marks the arrival ofspring. This festival is celebrated by people in theIndian subcontinent in various ways. Vasant Panchami also marks the Beginning of the preparation forHolika andHoli, which is exactly 40 days later.
In hinduism, the festival of vasant panchami is dedicated to goddessSaraswati, the goddess of knowledge, language, music and all arts. She symbolizes creative energy and power in all its forms, including longing and love.
Vasant panchami also celebrates the ripening of yellow flowers of mustard crops on the agricultural field. Yellow and the mustard flower is also associated with the goddess saraswati in hindu religion, making it symbolic for people to dress in yellow and exchange yellow sweets along with making dishes with saffron in it to give it a yellow color.
This festival is celebrated in various ways across the country. In Eastern India, people host saraswati puja in temples and their homes. Even schools organize pujas on their premises to celebrate the festival.
In the state ofOdisha, the festival is celebrated as Basanta Panchami/Sri Panchami /Saraswati Puja. Rituals and Yagnas are done in educational institutes across the state. Children aged 4-5 years start their learning on this day in a unique ceremony called 'Khadi-Chuan' or 'Vidya-Arambha'.
